Amateur Baseball Association of Thailand


Presently, it is generally accepted that sport is one of the important factor to develop human resource’s physical and mental of the nation. Also, Baseball Federation of Japan has intended to support for the establishment of baseball association and publicize the baseball sport in Thailand by cooperating with Minebea group of Companies (Thailand) for the said objective. The Amateur Baseball Association of Thailand (ABAT) has officially established on January 3, 1992.

At that time Pol. Major General Chanwith Watcharapuk, Assistant Commander of Drug Suppression, was the President of the association, and Mr. Vutichai Udomkarnjananan, Director of Minebea Group of Companies (Thailand) was the Secretary General of the association. ABAT was sanctioned by the National Culture Commission and Sport Authority of Thailand and was recognized by the Olympic Committee of Thailand as a sole responsible organization of baseball in Thailand.

Until now, ABAT has been continually operated for 7 terms, and Mr. Somsak Pornpudpong currently president of ABAT with 18 Administrators Committee and 24 Member Association. ABAT was supported by various organizations from the government agency and private agency, particularly, Baseball Federation of Japan, Minebea Group of Companies, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and The Embassy of Japan. The Charity Concert had organized for raising a fund to support the association. ABAT has intended to publicize the basic acknowledge of baseball and develop the baseball sport to wider known in Thailand, such as organizing the competition, organizing a training course for Umpire, etc.

ABAT has organized to build up the first Stadium standard of baseball in Thailand which sponsored by JEC FUN (BANPAKU) in the area of the 60th Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit’s Birthday Celebration Stadium at Patumtanee. The Minebea Group of Companies in Thailand has been committed to the promotion of baseball in Thailand. In the first place , the Group supported to establish the Amateur Baseball Association of Thailand in January 1992 with the support of the International Baseball Association and the Baseball Federation of Asia.

Since then, the Group has assisted in collecting funds for the Thai association ; appealed publicly for the contribution to baseball, and in organizing practice sessions and lecture meeting by players/ex-players of Japan’s professional baseball; and has offered support for construction of the first baseball stadium in Thailand. Thai national baseball team made great strides : for the first time in the nation’s history, it took part in the Asian Games in Hiroshima held in October 1994, and it also advanced to the final qualifying game of the regional baseball tournament in Southeast the Atlanta Olympics and 19th Asian baseball tournament etc.
