Taipei City, Chinese Taipei. A successful first day at the inaugural IBAF 12U Baseball World Championship is in the books. Six games were played, five of them ended early due to mercy rule, as the favorites confirmed their ambitions early in the tournament. The most thrilling game was the highly anticipated duel between Chinese Taipei and Cuba at Tien-Mou in the evening, which the hosts lost narrowly.

Group A

Lithuania – Japan 0-16 (5)

Japan didn’t waste any time, scoring in all five frames of a 16-0 win over Lithuania at the Youth Park Stadium in Taipei City. Japanese pitching allowed just a fifth-inning double. Otherwise it was perfect. A shutout for one of the favored teams in the tournament.

Hong Kong – Ecuador 2-15 (5)

Ecuador defeated Hong Kong 15-2 in five innings at the Youth Park in Taipei City on Friday. Nine runs by Ecuador in the third inning put the game out of reach. Hong Kong only was able to score twice in the fifth.

Chinese Taipei – Cuba 2-6

Cuba denied host Chinese Taipei a perfect start into the tournament, as they celebrated a 6-2 victory. It was a close game until the sixth inning, when Cuba pulled away with four runs. 2,500 were in attendance to see the opening ceremony at Tien-Mou and the following match, easily the biggest crowd of the day.

Group B

Venezuela – Italy 23-0 (4)

Venezuela opened the competition at the inaugural 12U Baseball World Championship with a 23-0 shutout over Italy. Venezuelan pitching didn’t allow any hits in the four-inning game. Four players for Venezuela hit homeruns at the Shing-Sheng Stadium in Taipei City.

Mexico - Philippines 15-0 (4)

Mexico opened the day at the Tien-Mou Stadium with a 15-0 shutout over the Philippines. Three homeruns in the first two frames helped blow things up quickly. Philippines pitching settled in, but their offense only managed two hits in the game.

Indonesia – Korea 0-15 (4)

The second game at Tien-Mou Stadium in Taipei City also only featured four innings, as Korea shut out Indonesia 15-0. Four pitchers combined to throw in the game. Each one of them was perfect for the second no-hitter of the day. 12 different scored at least a run.
