Australia and New Zealand dominate on Day 1 of Tournament in Guam
Australia and New Zealand dominated on day one of the 18U Oceania Championship at Paseo Stadium in Guam. The Diamondblacks opened the tournament with a 14-3 victory over the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI). Joe Boyce struck out five to earn the win, while Carl Camacho got charged with the loss. Nick Koh went 3-for-4 to pace the New Zealand offense. Dewald De Klerk drove in three.
In the second game 425 spectators witnessed a 10-0 shutout of Australia against Guam. The game ended due to ten-run rule after six innings. Daniel McGraph led the pitching staff, which allowed just two hits overall, with nine strikeouts and the win. Ryan Obispo took the loss. Aaron Sayers (Australia) was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
The 18U Oceania Championship, which serves as Qualifier for the XXV IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul, Korea later this year, continues with two games on Saturday. Australia takes on CNMI, while New Zealand will square off with host Guam.
