Day 2 in Guam features Shutouts for Australia and New Zealand
The 18U Oceania Championship at Paseo Stadium in Guam continued with the second day of the double round robin preliminary phase. Australia and New Zealand improved to 2-0 with a pair of 10-0 shutouts.
The Aussies opened the day by defeating the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI). Aaron Sayers led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a RBI. On the mound Mitch Ley picked up the win. Leroy Regis took the loss.
In the second game New Zealand needed just five innings to down host Guam. Mak Rolfe struck out seven in a brilliant outing on the mound. Dewald De Klerk continued his hot streak at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Nick Koh also scored twice for the Kiwis. Sean Cruz got charged with the loss.
The tournament, which serves as qualifier for the XXV IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul, Korea, resumes play on Sunday, when Australia and New Zealand will meet for the first time in a matchup of undefeated clubs.
