Results 18U Oceania Championship January 31

Australia and New Zealand victorious on Day 5 of Tournament in Guam

The 18U Oceania Championship at Paseo Stadium in Guam continued on Tuesday with day five of the preliminary round. Australia (5-0) and New Zealand (3-2) picked up wins and will meet in the championship game on Thursday.

Australia wasted no time to defeat the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands by a score of 18-1. The team from Down Under scored 13 runs in the first three frames en route to the blowout victory. Ryan Ihle collected four runs and two RBI. Michael Gahan struck out six, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in four innings. Jonah Flores got charged with the loss.

New Zealand scored five runs in the sixth inning of their 9-2 win over host Guam, which secured the Kiwi’s participation in the final. Mak Rolfe pitched a complete game, highlighted by seven strikeouts. At the plate Nick Koh, Khalid Gilbert and Dewald DeKlerk combined for six RBI. Clayton Cruz took the loss for Guam.

The preliminary round at the 18U Oceania Championship will end on Wednesday with games between Australia and New Zealand as well as Guam and CNMI. The exact same matchups also will make up the classification games on Thursday. The tournament is serving as qualifier for the XXV IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul, Korea later this year.
