Results 18U Oceania Championship February 1

Australia concludes Preliminary Round with perfect 6-0 Record

The preliminary round at the 18U Oceania Championship at Paseo Stadium in Guam ended on Wednesday. Australia finished up the first round with a perfect 6-0 record. They defeated New Zealand in a preview of the finals by a score of 11-1 in six innings. Cameron Warner doubled twice and drove in two to lead the Aussie offense. Dakota Mitchell struck out seven for the win. Jack Malcolm took the loss for the Kiwis, which dropped to 3-3.

In the second game of the day Guam won a slugfest 11-7 against the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI). Guam scored three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to turn a 4-5 deficit into a lead. Polly-Card Luther went 4-for-5 with three runs and a RBI to spark the hosts. CNMI’s Ricardo Dela Cruz collected three hits in the losing effort. David Morta picked up the win on the mound. Carl Camacho was charged with the loss.

The tournament, which also serves as qualifier for the XXV IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship, ends on Thursday with the classification round. Guam (2-4) and CNMI (1-5) will square up in the afternoon for the bronze medal game. In the evening Australia (6-0) and New Zealand (3-3) will meet in the championship game.
